GUESSES

How To Play

🎯 Basic Rules

  • Your goal is to find the secret MLB player
  • Your guesses are tracked but unlimited - try as many times as you need
  • Use the search bar to look up and submit your guesses
  • Color-coded feedback shows how close each guess is
  • Hints are available but add penalty guesses to your total

🏆 Ranking System

Players are ranked by similarity to the secret player:

  • 100% = Exact match - you've found the secret player!
  • 80-99% = Very close - you're on the right track
  • 60-79% = Getting warmer - some stats match
  • Below 40% = Cold - try a different type of player
  • Note: Cross-position comparisons (e.g. pitchers vs. batters) have a lower maximum similarity

💡 Hints

Available hints and their guess penalties:

  • 🌎 Nationality (+10 guesses)
  • ⚡ Active or retired status (+10 guesses)
  • 👕 Main Position (+10 guesses)
  • 🔢 Latest Team (+15 guesses)
  • 📝 First 3 Letters of Name (+15 guesses)

Note: Each hint used will add to your total guess count. Choose wisely!

📊 Similarity Factors

We use Bill James Similarity Scores plus additional factors such as, similar teams played for, MLB Debut Year, Nationality or career length.

The algorithm starts with 1000 points and subtracts points for differences between two players' statistics. The more similar two players are, the closer their final score will be to 100%. Batters must have at least 500 at-bats, and pitchers must have at least 100 innings pitched to be compared.

Example Guesses for secret Player Shohei Ohtani
Pete Alonso 86.1%

Pete Alonso has a high similarity percentage: you are on the right track and close.

Fred McGriff 25.9%

This guess would tell you that the player doesn't share many (if any) similarities with the secret player. We would advise to choose a completely different player for your next guess.
